Stamford Fire Department officials say they observed a column of dense, black smoke in the area of Shippan Avenue and Cove Road on Tuesday, Oct. 1 around 3 p.m.

Fire crews dispatched the department and determined that the fire was coming from a garage in the area of Wardwell Street and Fredrick Street.

Upon arrival, fire crews say they observed heavy fire and smoke showing from two front-facing garage doors and a left side window at the rear of the two-family, three-story wood-frame structure.

Fire crews worked to extinguish the blaze in the garage area using a hose line. However, the fire started to extend up the two front side corners of the house, prompting the need for two additional hand lines, officials say.

Fire crews stretched the additional hand lines to the first- and second-floor residences while other firefighters began ventilating the roof to stop the spread of the fire in the attic.

The Incident Commander declared the fire to be under control around 3:50 p.m., officials say. Crews continued to work for more than an extra hour to ensure complete eradication of the fire.

The Stamford Fire Marshal Office was also on the scene into the evening to investigate the cause of the fire, which has not yet been released.

Stamford EMS arrived on the scene to evaluate firefighters as they entered the rehabilitation area. One fire crew member was transported to the Stamford Hospital Emergency Department with a minor injury and has been released.

No other civilian or firefighter injuries have been reported.

The two residential occupancies suffered extensive smoke and water damage to the first and second floors, but the fire was generally contained to the garage, exterior walls and the attic of the structure, officials say.

The fire displaced two families who were making their own plans for relocation.
